Sedimentation is one of the most common quality issues in tea beverage production. A clear tea drink may look attractive immediately after filling, but after several days or weeks of storage, sediment or floating particles may appear at the bottom of the bottle. This not only affects the appearance of the product but can also reduce consumer confidence.

So, what causes sedimentation in tea beverages? The answer often lies in a combination of formulation, raw materials, processing conditions, and equipment selection.
- Start with the Formula
The first step is to review the formulation.
Tea naturally contains polyphenols, proteins, polysaccharides, minerals and other components. During extraction and storage, some of these substances may react with each other and form insoluble compounds.
For example, excessive tea extraction can increase the concentration of polyphenols and tannins, resulting in stronger astringency and a higher risk of precipitation. Minerals in the water can also react with tea components and contribute to haze or sediment.
Therefore, optimizing the tea-to-water ratio, extraction temperature, extraction time, pH and ingredient compatibility is essential.
- Check the Raw Materials and Water Quality
Water quality is another important factor.
Hard water containing excessive calcium or magnesium may negatively affect beverage clarity and stability. The quality and particle size of tea leaves, powders, extracts and functional ingredients should also be carefully evaluated.
Depending on the formulation, RO water treatment, activated carbon filtration or other water treatment technologies may be considered to improve consistency.
- Optimize Tea Extraction
Extraction is not simply about extracting as much as possible. The objective is to achieve the right balance between flavor, color, functionality and stability.
Proper control of extraction temperature and time can help reduce the extraction of excessive tannins and other components that may contribute to sedimentation.
After extraction, effective solid-liquid separation is also critical. A suitable coarse filtration and fine filtration system can remove suspended particles before the beverage enters the blending and filling stages.
- Pay Attention to Filtration and Homogenization
For products containing fine particles, extracts or functional ingredients, conventional filtration may not always be sufficient.
Depending on the product characteristics, manufacturers can consider bag filters, cartridge filters, membrane filtration or homogenization systems.
Homogenization can help improve the dispersion of certain insoluble or poorly soluble components, reducing the tendency of particles to aggregate during storage.
The correct filtration level, however, should always be selected according to the product. Over-filtration may remove desirable flavor or functional components.
- Don’t Ignore Deaeration and Heat Treatment
Oxygen can accelerate oxidation reactions and negatively affect the color, flavor and stability of tea beverages.
A vacuum deaerator or inline deaeration system can help reduce dissolved oxygen before filling. Proper pasteurization or UHT treatment can then provide microbiological stability while minimizing unnecessary thermal damage.
